Surviving in times like this

These are really challenging times for many Nigerians and in particular Christians. It is obvious that the state of security in our nation has become a major concern for all.

Added to this, are the high cost of living, poor infrastructure (bad roads, lack of water and electricity etc) and of course bad leadership. Our newspaper and television are daily filled with stories of a bomb explosion going off in one place or the other; armed robbery attacks on innocent citizens taking place even in broad daylight; road accidents that could have been avoided and of course many dying out of hunger and lack.

The question for us as believers is that throught it all, what are we to do? How can we survive these trying times? The answer can be found in no other place but the Word of God. The Bible which is the Word of God has answers to every challenge of life that might ever come our way.

What then do we do in these trying and challenging times?

Understand that God will always make every unpleasant situation work out for good.

Many times He uses challenging seasons and periods to bring something good. It was the forthcoming famine in Egypt that God used to showcase Joseph. (Genesis Chapter 41). Over the years, God had been preparing Joseph in the school of life. First as a slave in a strange land, and then as a prisoner. It was not until the king (Pharaoh) had a dream that he needed interpretation for that Joseph was brought out of the dungeon and stood before the king. The long and short of the story is that Joseph woke up that day as a Prisoner but slept as the Prime Minister (Second in command of the land). For Joseph, his prison experience worked for his good and the good of the land. Likewise, through all the challenging experiences we are going through as a nation, God will raise many Joseph’s from amongst his children to bring a solution may you be one of them in Jesus name.

Look to God as your provider, protector and ultimate source.

The Psalmist said “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth” (Psalm121:1-2)

This is the time to look to no one else but God. The truth is putting one’s trust in man is very dangerous, because man is very unreliable and untrustworthy. Man might promise you heaven and earth today, but be sure he will disappoint you tomorrow. However, God Almighty the Creator of the heavens and earth is dependable, reliable and trustworthy. He never breaks a promise, and His Word once He has made a promise to us, He is committed to keeping it to the very end. His Word is His bond. He even honours His Word more than His name. He is the source and never runs dry but is more than able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or imagine .

Even in the midst of all the seeming chaos around us, look to Him in all things, and He will never let you down in Jesus name.

Pray and plan always

Jesus said in (Luke 18:1) “Men ought always to pray and not to faint”. With the myriad of challenges around us, this is the time to pray like never before. Prayer is the master key; it opens the great treasures of heaven; it makes the impossible possible. It is the believer’s greatest weapon through which we turn circumstances and situations to conform with the will of God and the mandate of heaven Halleluyah! These are not the times to grumble, murmur or complain, but the times to go down on our knees and pray. Let us remind God of His promises to us as individuals families and as a nation.

As we pray, we also need to plan. Many times believers spend a lot of energy and time praying, which is a good thing. However, praying without putting adequate plans in place is a futile exercise. The Book of proverbs says in (Prov 16:1)… “The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord”

In essence, it is the duty of man to plan, and God’s part to answer the prayers of our tongues.

Therefore, as we pray concerning all the unpleasant situations around, let us also take time to plan. Are you having challenges in your finances? Then have a proper financial plan, plan how you spend money, learn to save, be prudent and of course give like never before.

What about your health? Have a personal health plan too? Watch your diet; being to exercise and also rest well. Look into every area of your life and begin to develop plans and strategies that can help you succeed.

 Rest in the Lord

Most of all, In Mark 4: 35-41 when Jesus was in a boat with His disciples in the midst of terrible storm, He did something that baffled and amazed them. He was fast asleep inside the boat! They had been busy fretting and worrying over the storms around them and could not understand how He could be asleep.

However, He was teaching us a lesson on how to behave when faced with the storms of life – Rest in the Lord, put your faith in Him and declares His Word.
